Drop Out and Max300 (not sure about the other maxes; haven't listened to them much) are in 2/4. Which is why some people are so damn confused and think that they're really 130 and 150 bpm respectively, just at double speed. _________________

It is math, but it's not hard to explain. If you count in time to the beat of a song, with most songs you'll notice that every fourth beat is stronger. ONE two three four ONE two three four.... etc. That's what the first (or top) 4 in 4/4 time means (4 beats per measure). The second (or bottom) one's only important if you're writing the music down (ie. for sheet music), but the default is 4.
Cutie Chaser, if you try to count like that (ONE two three four ONE two three four...) you'll find that it's not quite right (go on, try it). Instead, every third beat is stronger (ONE two three ONE two three); Cutie Chaser is in 3/4 time. And Holic is supposedly in 7/4 time, i.e. every seventh beat is stronger (I'll have to check that one out myself; hadn't noticed that before!).
You can use this information to your advantage when playing the game. Most songs will have some kind of pattern that repeats according to their time. Many songs, for example, have air on the strong beat and taps on the others. JUMP step step step JUMP step step step... etc. Check out DXY's steps vs. Cutie Chaser's steps: The 4/4 vs. 3/4 pattern is pretty clear.
Next week's lesson: phrases! Or: "Why displaying stepcharts in 10-measures per column is a silly thing to do".
(Note: I am not a musician (I'm a computer engineer), I have never played an instrument, and I never took any more music than the bare minimum required by public schooling, and not since way back in middle school. My point being, you don't have to be a musician to understand this stuff.) |

One of the best songs to see how time signatures work is in Stoic (heavy). It starts out like a metronome, and it counts each beat on the fourth. Then each on the eighth, then sixteenth, and so forth. This lets you realize if you count the beat, it's 4/4, and it stays 4/4 all thought it.
All that means is.
There are four beats in a measure.
The fourth note gets the beat.
If it were 7/8.
That would mean 7 beats in a measure.
The eighth note gets the beat.
That's -all-. |

Like I said, I'm no musician, but that didn't sound right. Thank $DEITY for google and wikipedia:

So, I just misunderstood you... you meant every fourth of a measure gets a beat, not that the fourth beat of each measure is stronger (which is what I thought you meant, and which made no sense). There's me, not properly understanding musical vocabulary.
Continuing to read that article though... wow, compound time signatures are... complicated. |

Hmmm.... I think you may be right about the not-straigt-3/4 bit, but, no, that doesn't sound right either... (4+2)/4 maybe? (ONE two three four ONE two, ONE two three four ONE two...). I dunno, give that a shot and tell me what do you think.

i cant BELIEVE no one has mentioned this yet...
Bag is in 12/8 time. And its in 1/12 beats, not 1/16 beats. Which is why it's so hard to PA, cuz the machine can't process 1/12s, thus making your 1/32 margin for error even smaller.
Edit: And on the topic of Holic, being the Music Theory nerd that I am, the beginning is in 11/8 (OUCH) and the rest is in 7/4. The difference is this (i will try my very best to explain this simply):
7/4 means there are seven seperate beats, and each can be split in half or in fourths, etc. so you find yourself counting the beat 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 instead of the traditional 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4.
11/8 is a little trickier. there are four seperate beats, but three are longer than the fourth one (the longer ones are dotted notes, if you understand any music). so you would count it 1-and-ah-2-and-ah-3-and-ah-4-and 1-and-ah-2-and-ah-3-and-ah-4-and, instead of the normal 1-and-ah-2-and-a-3-and-ah-4-and-ah 1-and-ah-2-and-a-3-and-ah-4-and-ah (this may not sound that normal to you, but listen to bag while thinking about this...this is 12/8, which, like i said, bag is in). The lack of that last "ah" gives it the stilted sound you hear.

bag? That is definitely not 12/8. Its again 4/4 except for its a complex time, basically meaning lots of triplets. Don't count each of the notes in the triplet as a beat. Remember, this song is 60 bpm. If you were counting it as 12/8, then the song would be like 360 bpm. Not right. I would agree that in theory it could be written in 12/8, yet it says 60 bpm, and from that I would tend to think that the triplets are simply triplets and not individual beats.
Now Cutie Chaser, yes indeed that is 4/4 measures with 2/4 measures. I totally agree on that. I mean yeah you could say 6/4, but the phrases sound more like 4/4 with 2/4. That's just me.
