I'm not new to this game, but I was wondering why the name is Dance Dance Revolution? One of my friends said it was because in the Japanese language, they use verbs twice in a row or something like that. _________________

It's sorta like a new way of dancing, like a revolution that changed the whole world forever...something like that. It's a dancing revolution! |

Doesn't it sound better with Dance Dance Revolution instead of Dance Revolution? Seems weird to say only once. _________________

the only reason it seems weird saying it once is cause thats not what were used to. If when we first heared about it they told us it was Dance Revolution. Now we'd thinking Dance Dance Sounded Weird _________________

I don't have a conclusive reason, but several times in Asian names I see the same word used twice. Some areas around here include...
Hao-Hao Cuisine
Neko Neko Anime
Hai Hai
and other things... |

Why would it make sense in any language to use a verb twice in a row? For the record, Japanese does not use the same verb twice in a row. I honestly can't imagine any language that does does. |

In Japanese culture, they have certain onomatopeias for various feelings, where they say the sound twice, like peko peko is hungry, as in 'I'm feeling peko peko'. I'm thinking that's why it's dance dance, because it's not just dancing, it's to make you really feel like you're dancing. Or something like that.

But the problem with the name is that everyone thinks your dancing when you actually aren't. So a name like step step revolution. I don't know...it was the first thing that came to mind. _________________

The REAL reason DDR has "Dance" appearing twice is so that it's funny when you say "It's a DDR Revolution" (or a DDRR).

My take is that if DDR's name was actually 'Dance Revolution', then the url for this site would be 'drfreak.com.' Thus, people would expect this site to have weird hospital fetish porn, which wouldn't be good for anybody. _________________

If Dance Dance Revolution was in JP, it might go like
Mai Mai no Henkaku *shrugs* It might also be Dansu Dansu no Henkaku ,but the first may be right. _________________

I wish it wasn't called Dance Dance Revolution , just because we're not dancing..We're stepping in rhtym with the music.
I Think it really should be just callled "Step Step Revolution" _________________

But isn't dancing in general just stepping to the rhythm of a song? The only difference is that you improv the whole time when dancing normally, and you do things with more than just your feet. I see your point... I mean if a guy busts out in some club and starts stepping in four different spots on the floor he'd look like an idiot... but playing regular DDR is just taking the upper body motion out of regular dancing and limiting the amount of space you use...
Am I just crazy or are you guys getting where I'm coming from? |
