Teams can have as many as you want them to...I've been on team s00r...team NOT portland, team "secure with our heterosexuality", and now on team 5x flat > you (also known as we <3 bimp)...generally teams are more of just friends then anything..but it's fun to be on a "team" and such _________________

I belong to a DDR "cult", though not officially titled a team. Basically, we're a bunch of kids who play DDR and live in Windsor.
Loved by few, feared by many. Despised by XS employees (as the group of us block the entrance to the rest of the arcade. Hey, not our fault - they had to put the machine right in front of the entrance!). There's roughly nine of us, but the group varies from gathering to gathering, and we're hardly ever all in the same place at once. But it works for me. _________________

You can't have the team all be playing at the same time in competetion (although there are team attack tournaments, not frequently). The purpose of a team is to have players that when put together, play well as a whole because of communication and interaction. With a strong leader/coach on top of the team, instructing their moves.
Usually DDR teams are a group of friends who like to play together. I would probably use the term affiliation, instead of team. Hell, it even sounds more professional. |
I see "team" just like Phrekwenci described it as more of "a group of friends who like to play together." But I still call it "team" because it's the group playing together, spending time together, and supporting each other.
Yeah the word affiliation does sound cool and professional, but it feels like it's lacking in that trust and bond that keeps the team together. I call a team more like a "comradery." The team has similar interests, goals, and talents, but each member of the team is an impact everyone in the team, because they are friends that like to spend time together and hang out, and there's definitely nothing wrong with that.
I mean I've known everyone in my team for many years, and we prefer to be referred to as a team because we're always relying on each other and doing things besides DDRing together and as a team. With DDR, you're only going to get one or two people up at a time, but they're representing the team and we're supporting them as a team. Thus we have teamwork. |

I guess I should say something about the history of a few of the teams in northern California, and some of my opinions about teams (apologies for the lack of continuity, not listing your group, and overall nonsense in the post):
I guess we all started doing teams when we began watching the online videos from Japan & Korea, where they had DDR teams such as the Brilliant Steppers, A-Team, & Team Neo. Perhaps it brought people back to the idea of breakdancing crews like the Rock Steady Crew, et al. and we wanted to do the same in which we formed a group of players who are well known amongst others and could be affiliated with other people who are just as good. And perhaps there is an appeal to represent a group that is well known & respected, and will look out for you when others try to mess with you.
I won't get into defining what is a "team" or "affiliation", but out of making this post not any longer, I'll just bunch them altogether, and try to clarify where needed.
There weren't many "teams" when DDR US 1st mix came out, but more group of friends. Most of these people became regular players who would hang out at the main places for DDR at that time: Milpitas Golfland, and the Sony Metreon's Air Tight Garage. However, we saw a lot of teams formed in southern California, with such teams/group/affiliations as Team Unity, Team Hardcore, Always In Motion, The hostage Crew, & Team Changoland.
And thus in the fall of 2000 on a visit to an anime convention in southern California, a group of people, most from northern California, took a lyric from a hip hop song from Thirstin Howl III, made a joke from it, and formed Step Squad. This was around the time when DDR USA was newly out, and many people began playing the game. Step Squad added many friends who liked to play the game, and wanted to do well, yet be supportive of the game itself, and just have an all around good experience playing this game with friends and other DDR enthusiasts.
Then again, there is always a slight competitiveness to teams, and we can't deny that we sometimes want to go out there and do well, perhaps place, or even win some tournaments.
Step Squad started off with three friends, and now has over 20 friends and family who support each other. Though some of us don't play the game anymore, we're generally still supportive and would like to see people get better (not just our group), create more freestyles and become more technically accurate, and just have an overall fun time playing the game. Some of our Step Squad family include Clark Kent, EnoOn, Lil' B, as well as others who have joined in 2002, like JAS, Drakonis, Hattori Hanzo, VHG, Danglewings, IguanaGrrl, and many more.
In the spring of 2001, another group was formed by many of northern California's best players at the time, and that group was called Return To Freestyle. This was formed by a group which included Mel B. and Azn Innovation, and this group recruited many of the more well known freestylers and technical players in California, and boasts a strong group with successful tournament players as A-Jay, JCipher, Ferrari, Reign, Emphasys and Tran Powah. This group also began recruiting players outside of California, and picked up such great players as Tequila from Omaha and NobodyJen from New York.
Upon the success of many of the frequent players at Suisun's Scandia, a group was formed called the Arrow Security Scandians. This group isn't as selective as Step Squad or Return To Freestyle, but it brought out a return to having lots of fun with the game. What makes this group unique is that they have many good freestylers such as Sweaty Boy, Mr. Hypnotikz, Nado, and Liustyle, as well as strong technical players as Bradikkal & b00.
Around the same time came a group made up of players from CSU Sacramento, called The Visionaries, which also has Mr. Hypnotikz, and such players as Brooka E, XXXPlizit, and Bruce Leroy.
Late in 2002, a young group came out called Mad Stepz, who shined in December of 2002 with strong freestyle performanecs from 001 and NaHs, and is continuing to grow with many strong freestylers like Marky.
Of course there are groups/teams/affiliations based on area, as we have had over the course of playing this game such groups as the Sacramentals/SacBemani group, the Super Villian Militia from the Sunvalley Mall in Concord, and The Riptide Arcade crew in San Francisco's Pier 39.
We also have "teams" just out of fun, not really super competitive, but just groups out for having fun, like Killer Pals and Group HuGS.
What I really like about our area, is that even though there might be some competitiveness to each team, we are all generally supportive of each other. There is no ill will towards each other, and we all want to see each other come up with great freestyles and do better in technical matches. Even some people have more than one team affliation, like Bruce Leroy and Mr. Hypnotikz being both A.S.S. and Visionaries, and many others.
Teams are fun, especially when it's not all that serious. But it does help in making people work harder to come up with better freestyles, and makes some work harder to be better at technical play.
I've blabbered too much right now, so I'll just stop now. But if you want more clarity, you can always PM me or ask on this thread.
And ending on a random note, I'd join Team MMF anyday. _________________

I'm thinkin of starting my own team myself or join CAS even though I suck. And no need to feel sorry for me or anything, I'm just good enough but I'm not what you call "that good" Anyways I'm thinkin of callin our team Team Solo Speed Attackers, cause we all use speed mods except one of our friends plays it old school and I only bar rape.
I can B most catas, 10 Heavy AA's, slowly workin on PA, and good enough at Doubles. I'm nothing special. I'm a speed freak, doesn't play Onis.
Akeen, he's just a little better than me just by a little bit though we both can't turn yet. He scores better than me in battles. Sucks at Doubles.
James, he alternates from Standard/Heavy. He can turn/side-step and we can't, how sad. He hates the bar therefore he never rapes, and he sucks at Doubles.
Joe, he plays everything on 1x unless it's Bag. He was better at Doubles than I was before I started owning me on it.
Lookin for a 5th member, though we just play for fun and we know we aren't that good to compete with real competetiors. I do like competetion and the fun. _________________

Well some of you are posting about your team information, i guess ill post mine also(this team was "officially" confirmed last week) NOTE: there is no leaders.
Oscar- Thats me Im better at singles than i am at doubles. same goes for my PA. I love to do onis and ive beaten Naoki Standard, Neo-Naoki Standard, Soul 6, and Nearly 130. I also got 4 Light "AAA"s www.blondegirl, ordinary world, irresistablement, and love love shine
Alex- he's an average player where i live. Not too much to say about him though.
Jared- The stupidest one of them all. (He's a whole lot faster than me but im up there with him. we both have beaten the same 10 footers except paranoia survivor max. he's got me on that one) The only one daring enough to literally lick a dead bird (i thought it was damn funny)
Matthew- exactly like Alex only Alex is a little better than him.
Well, there you go. My so called "team"---->"Team Extreme" (kinda corny but that was the best name we could think of) The MAIN reason we thought of the name "Team Extreme" is because we ONLY play on 2 Extreme machines. That's right, down here in Lubbock, Texas, we have 2 extreme machines. (and a shitty ass pump it up machine that NO ONE EVER plays)

Can Psuedo-Schitzophrenia constitute as me being a legittimate one-man team?
Actually, due to work and the incapability to conform around a work schedule. I'm a one man team/affiliation.
I, Spinal Injury, am a part of the A.M.O.D. (buttocks-Masters Of Disaster).
normally, a team/affiliation is comprised of 2 or more people and uually play together,
I'm just a one man team that plays with myself all the time. |
