I was quite disturbed when i came upon this comment in a post by Yakka Yaeko (I hope its ok that I used your post)
Quote: | I can't pass LoM. What? What are you staring at? Sore, thirteen-year-old legs don't move fast... at least, not fast enough. I get too tired. And I'm afraid to grab the bar, because I have learned from DDR Freak that it's wrong to do so (and I don't dispute that. No further discusson upon the topic is needed). |
Do you guys think thats true? Is the reason so many people think bar raping is bad is because it was "beaten" into them. I for one have been broughten up believing that you don't touch the bar, that its just there for those people who can't pass songs without it otherwise. But is it really that bad? Lets look at the facts, grabing the bar can:
1. Help out your stamina so you can play longer
2. Help you full combo songs easier
3. Help you pass songs you can't otherwise
What are your views on bar raping? Do you think the DDR community has affected your views any? _________________

I dont really mind if someone bar 'rapes' if it's on one of the MAXes. If it's like R&P maniac, I might mind a little, but to see someone doing it on butterfly light would be stupid _________________

My feelings on it are that I don't do it and seeing people do it makes me think that they are not really doing the song, no matter what song it is. If they can't pass a song without holding onto the bar then I would think that that means you would need to work harder on the song without using the bar. I grew up not using the bar at all. That doesn't mean I hate or dislike the people that do use the bar in anyway at all.
This is by no means law or anything like that, just how I feel about holding the bar. _________________

I get alot of flak for bar raping, people assume that if I do it while playing a Max it automatically means I can't pass it without the bar. I always have to tell them it's for my PA, but they never believe me, and I'm not about to waste another dollar proving it to them.
Max300:
Bar-A
No Bar-A
Legend of Max:
Bar-B
No Bar-C
(Not to start another score/accomplishment thread, but really the bar doesn't make THAT much of a difference in my playing as most would be taught to think, I'm not instantly AAA'ing songs.) _________________

I wasn't really into the online ddr scene when I decided whether or not to use the bar. One of the kids I played with regularly was using the bar for balance so I tried it but I wasn't sure what it could do for me. Then I went to visit my family in Seattle and I visitted Illuzions. I saw a lot of amazing players there who were using the bar and I realized it was a tool that could be used for more then just keeping myself from falling. After that I tried it out a little more seriously. Generally, if I can pass a song with the bar I can pass it without the bar. It's just a matter of being familiar the steps (if it's a tricky song). But, the bar helps me save some stamina as well as keeping me balanced for stomps and other steps I have a little difficulty with.
The bar is my friend. I treat it nicely and it is nice to me. If anyone is cruel to me or my bar I will have them thrown out of the arcade. Besides, I'm not the type to care what people think about me. My bar use is not a reflection of my character nor is anything about my (lack of) ddr skill. |

I live in the northwest.. therefore i bar rape BIMP beginner
seriously though.. everyone who is good at DDR in teh northwest (Oregon, Washington) bar rapes. Even our best player, GPF Lith, rapes the bar when he plays light and standard songs, and so does everybody else. The northwest also has some of the nation's best players.

Personally, all those reasons for bar raping is bad. I only understand use of the bar if it is used to PAing purposes. _________________

I never use the bar. My scores actually go down when I use the bar, because I get confused as to what I'm supposed to do. haha.
The only song I haven't passed is PSM oni, and i doubt i could pass that even if i could bar rape. i just can't cross over that fast yet... _________________

I thought the bar was for saftey.....but anyways i think the reason so many people are afraid to bar it is because it truthfully takes more stamnia to beat a song NOT using the bar than using the bar, however using the bar is still no problem, it just makes things easier. Some people who can A or AA any of the maxes and PS PSMO i noticed sometimes get ticked off at bar huggers cuz the mentality seems to be "Well i had to work so hard without the bar to A it, why are they getting praise for using the bar and doing better?" At least thats what ive noticed. But i still think bar is fine, i do it every once and a while when i do any of the maxes or PS or PSMO etc. _________________

Theres nothing wrong with bar raping, it just doesnt look as good. Its the players choice if they will sacrifice looks. In my case, i find being able to pass Max 300 alive is impressive enough that my bar raping isnt an issue. |
lol I think i've seen you pass it twice at the arcade (one of which was a b) but you've been having a lot of trouble even with the bar lately .

I think your right, most people work really hard to pass songs like ps and max 300 with out the bar then when others use the bar they get upset. I don't blame them in the least... ::jumps out window::
Well after reading all of this I have to admit that.... I still think bar raping is bad anyone have a good argument for it? _________________

Okay... what Jackie Chan Fan said here is the mentality I have, among other things. ^_~ I for one, being semi-short (5' 3-4"), can't use the bar very efficiently, and have found in the long run that it doesn't hep very many of us; I've seen someone effortlessly A Max300 and MaxX without the bar, and as stated before I've passed MaxX (for the only time) without using the bar (but I C'ed it, which isn't much better). I apssed Max300 with the bar, but that was only a C. Came close to passing it barless in Vegas, too...
My stamina is fine without the bar (I can AA Exotic Ethnic without it; for most of you, that's nothing, but for me it's one hell of a strain on my lungs ). FC'ing anything is nothing hard at all (I've never AAA'ed anything, to be brutally honest, but I've come three Greats away from it on Sync Heavy, 1 Great away from it on Brilliant 2 U Standard, and anywhere from 5 to 60 [I can't help it; my fast song PA is lagging for some reason, but it's probably me] Greats away on any other given song (excepting the Max Brothers, PSM and it's incarnatons, and certain other songs that I either don't play or don't have access to). Yes, I do use speed mods). I can pass almost anything thrown at me now, even if it's only barely.
The afraid was for sarcasm, BTW. A lot of people in Anchorage rape the bar without caring. I'm only guilty on counts of the Legend of Max, and only then if I'm playing against somebody (I can play out the whole song and fail anyways, so why not? It's not like I'm going to pass it, and nobody here sees anything wrong with it. Of course, then I feel like I've been cheating...)
And Frank, I hope you noticed this:

It's a matter of opinion. It's true that, in most cases, it makes playing much easier because you don't have to worry as much about balance or supporting your weight with your legs.
Personally, I look down on the bar, but I don't flame anyone for using it. I do, however, refuse to give anyone credit for anything they do that requires use of the bar. I also get disappointed by how many people use the bar, and how much praise they get for doing so. Bar rapers and the PSMO whorefests that follow are the main reasons I've nearly dropped out of tournaments.
That's them, however. I can't change the way they play, so the best I can do is adapt. Everyone has their opinion. Location is somewhat of an influence, though. If one habit is used in one area, it could spread more throughout that same area.
I've yammered enough. That's just my yuan's worth. _________________
