Hmm...I'm trying out for track this spring, but right now I just go running for a few miles a couple times a week when I feel like it. I used to get soreness in my calves really bad, to the point where I would have to take a day of DDR off, but it's gotten a lot better. I don't think I've ever played for 12 hours at once though, maybe 8-10 tops. Just keep at it and eventually you'll build up...um...whatever it is that makes you calves stop hurting thumb.gif

Yes the pain in your calves will stop hurting. DON'T DO SUCH A VIGOROUS DDR WORKOUT YOUR FIRST DAY. It's like lifting weights. Would you go in and lift 200 lbs your first day? noooooo. Also, DDR will help you with track. Long distance mostly. Build up stamina and strong (maybe not strong, but really toned calves). about 3 weeks ago i got noted on my calves by a girl, 2 actually. (They were 7th/8th grade girls, younger, but they still noted them.)

Hahahaha....oh, yeah. I run track, XC, and indoor. Unfortunately, I've never had the pleasure of doing both at the same time (twisted my ankle last year in wrestling, BUT I CAN RUN NEXT SATURDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!), but here's a little bit of help on how to keep yourself from dying in either track or DDR.

*No playing a lot of DDR on the day before a race. That's trying to get yourself to pull a hamstring. You don't need that.

*I'm going to assume you're in high school. With that said, track season is in spring (unless by track, you mean XC and indoor as well), so y'all shouldn't really be doing hardcore workouts yet. If you had a coach like mine, on the other hand, then I seriously will tell you to cut DDR time down to MAYBE 2 hours per day, even less if you happen to be a stomper. This is 'cause of the fact that stompers use the arches and soles of their feet a lot, and combining too much of that with a heavy running style could seriously cause a stress fracture...and you do NOT want one of those.

*How to get your calves to stop hurting? Lessen the amount of DDR time ('cause I know no coach will take DDR as an excuse for poor performance). They hurt all of the time because of the fact that you're giving them no time to rest (seriously). Goes along with the reason that bodybuilders will sometimes alternate days with their lifting (today's an arms day, tomorrow's a legs day, etc.). If you give your muscles no time to rest (I suggest about 36 hrs. between hardcore DDR sessions, hardcore runs, and anything else wouldn't want you doing before race day), they will actually begin to weaken rather than strengthen.

Hope that helped.

If he's playing on light, then 8 hours really isn't that much.

True, it won't be TOO terrible, but 8 hours of anything will start to suck after awhile. I was thinking of one of my stamina days (about 5 hrs yesterday of playing, and maybe 3 non-Witch Dr. SONGS were under 9 feet...and I would've done more if I had brought more money to the mall).

I partly disagree with that. Most of the fast heavy songs (Sakura, Cartoon Heros, Break Down, Witch Doctor, Rhythm of Police, etc.) will definitely help out if you're a SPRINTER and work on your speed and reaction time. Now if you do a nonstop DDR workout, that helps increase your endurance a bit. DDR has helped me a lot when I used to run in HS track.

But yea, definitely give your body enough rest before a race. Never do DDR or ANY other exercise a day before a meet.

Oh and one more thing:

<<One more question does the soreness in your calves ever go away?>>
To solve that problem, take A LOT of calcium and potassium pills to ease the cramps and build stronger bones and muscles. And if they hurt, take aspirn or a warm, 20 min bubble bath after practice.

Because of DDR I rarely rarely ever feel sore anymore.

The last time I felt sore was when I had 2 soccer games in the same weekend and wound up playing at least 6 hours of DDR before each one at an arcade. I play 10 footers too much I think.

Don't forget the most overlooked mineral VITAL to your muscles:

Potassium!

It really helps with muscle exhaustion and cramping. A great source for potassium is a banana.

i hope this topic lives forever :)

yes, i run track, and i am also one of the youngest ddr'ers, but i have the most expierence...this is my 4th and a half year of DDR, and i joined track last year. I had so much expiernce with DDR, that I became a Varsity track member within a week. yes, it hurt, and I focused on track so much, that I didn't care about ddr at all. And then, one saturday, when i didn't have a race, i played ddr for a few hours. the next day of running, i got stress fractures on both of my shins. I got this a year ago. because i mixed up A LOT OF TRACK WITH A LOT OF DDR, I HAVE A CHORNIC INJURY WHICH I MUST FIGHT!!!! So,, take it from me, one or the other...or else, it's real light on both ends of it...

low 16s...for a 5k, you know that's really good. that's an average of a little more than a 5-minute mile...but only god knows what kind of xSHITx you run on in Alabama...

In NYC, ya gotta run on VCP's 5k, where high 15s are the record for the SeeDed group...HILLS ANYONE?!?! IT IS XC!!

If you're seriously running in the low 16s, you should NOT have to worry about being overly tired from DDR. I run in the high 16s-low 17s and I almost never have 2-day stress anymore. If you're actually that well-conditioned, just cut your DDR time down to MAYBE a few hrs. a day and you should almost never have too many rep. stress problems (unless you're big...but again going back to your supposed race times, you're not too big a person).

{{EDIT}} I LOVE that 5K!!!![/b] It's so f-ing awesome running there! (bringing back memories of freshman year when I hit 5th in one race WHILE throwing up sick...my coach cussed me out for running sick and again for not waiting to throw up until we got to the bus...good times there). Anyway, try running in the syracuse area....we have SO many hills and things (kinda like in the Adirondacks and the Appalachians, but more bumpy and less exaggerated) that it's near impossible to get anything under 16min. up here without being =<-------- that close to a running GOD.
