Hey guys im just getting into Beatmania, and im looking to get the stuff for my PS2. I only really have 1 question. See i have a US PS2 and buying a whole new Japanese ps2 is outta my budget so im looking to mod my US one. I found this website

http://www.success-hk.com/pp/item_detail.asp?itemID={36C60905-6DF1-4A32-9831-5BA09BA0529F}

And its called the PS2 slide tool and it comes with the Swap Magic 2.0 discs. I was wondering if anyone knew if it was compatible with the Beatmania games.

And Howdy justin. If this slide tool junk works i might have to take one of those controllers offa your hands E13.gif

There's a simlpe answer to that....YES!!

Im an extreme n00b, i got 6th style, the slide tool thing, and a controller (another one is on the way). I got it all like 4 days ago and i am overly obsessed. This doesn't mean im good laugh.gif i can only do certain light7 songs (up to 4 stars) but i still really like this game. Oh, and i was wondering, is playing with two hands in IIDX the equivalent of bar raping in DDR?

Most people play with 2 hands. Only the experts play solely with 1 hand. However its good practice to occassionally play using just one hand for the keys. Helps when you get to harder songs where you have to continuosly scratch and hit the keys.

This is gonna sound real n00bish... Is there a difference between flashing 7's and regular 7's? I thought there was before I had ever played, but after looking through the 7K songlist it seems that every 7* song has those flashing bars on both sides of the stars. Unless I missed something... E19.gif

The term "flashing 7" comes from Styles 6th and up, where the numbers would flash for a song rated 7+.

In 5th Style, the little bar flashes for every 7, but the "flashing" 7s have a different Japanese character in the bottom left corner. (I believe V and DXY! are the only two songs on 7 Key that are 7+ in 5th Style).

Is it just me or are the 4* 7K songs generally about as hard, if not harder than 5* songs on L7?

That's probably a fair assessment. But it's difficult to compare ratings between Light-7 and 7-Key songs. The difficulty is stepped up a lot higher on 7-Key songs. Compare L7 Sync to 7-Key Abyss, there's a big difference between those 6's...

And sometimes it's best not to put all your faith in Konami's rating system anyway. There's always going to be songs that have the same ratings, although one will clearly be more difficult. Partially because certain people find certain songs to be easier/harder than others, and partially because Konami is on crack. Let's not forget the fact that they sometimes later end up "adjusting" ratings... on 5th Style, Something Wonderful is rated a 5 on 7-Key, but they bumped it up to a 6 on 6th Style. Entrance was originally rated a 6 and became a 7 later. I was passing some 7-star songs on 6th Style before I could do all the 6's... although two of those songs have been upgraded in later Styles from 6's to 7's (Hyper Boundary Gate and Starmine). So yeah.

It sounds like you're making good progress though, just keep playing... it feels amazing when things just "click" and songs you thought were impossible become passable. E1.gif

And Regulus...

It was a normal 7 in 5th Style, and was bumped up to a 7+ in 6th.

Isaru - What's always been weird to me is that IIDX got this reputation for being hard, hard, hard, and yet, song-for-song, it's not close to Keyboardmania or even Guitar Freaks. I love the nice balance between easy and hard in 5th Style, and I honestly believe that this is the only game, console or arcade, where they actually got Beginner Mode right. (BTW, you did the right thing by starting there. Start at the bottom and work your way up...you can't go wrong.) It wasn't until 6th Style that the challenge-uber-alles mentality kicked in, and it didn't taper off until around 8th Style.

One point I really want to drive home is that if you're looking for simple, managable stuff on IIDX, it's there. Start with Beginner Mode and move up to Light 7 when you're ready. Even the 6 songs on Light 7 aren't a pain once you get used to them. The only reason you need to get better is if you want to be able to play the entire songlist, and even that simple goal isn't problematic.

Anyway, glad you've gotten into this game, glad you're enjoying it, and above all, don't worry about your "slow" progress. I know just about anyone on just about any IIDX board would rip you to shreds, but trust me, you're doing great.

Are you planning on reserving the new console game when we finally get a flippin' release date? (For the record, we had to fill out TWO surveys just to get the privilege of making preorders through a Japan-based company sometime in the indeterminate future.)

That song needs to die.

One of four I can't beat on L7 (G2, Get On Beat Wild Style and The Safari).

I want to try IIDX out, but I have no access to it except a 50 mile ride, what should I do? I don't want to blow money on something I might not like.

my suggestion is to make friends with someone who has it. Or play normal beatmania (a number of arcades are getting it now) and imagine it with two more keys. Failing that, don't bother, cuz it is a whole lotta money, depending on who you buy from. Sometimes kids will bring a IIDX set up to tournies, that's how i got started
