*topic* i wish we still played the same way we did back in the days of 3rd mix. When freestyle was the way to go, now all anyone cares about is PA. I remember the things we used to do, to songs like afronova and PARANOiA. (you remember the HEY!!! stuff we did) I wish we could go back to that. Lately at the arcade ive been making people do it when i play. *teehee*

Yeah, I miss the days when not everybody was super good at DDR and getting good at DDR really meant something. Nowadays, getting good at DDR doesn't even let you hold a candle to most other DDR players.

Also I do miss more people's freestyle performances. I tend to gravitate towards energy rather than technical skills.

We need a new version of DDR, a new mix on the old formula. DDR had alot of zeal when it was new, seeing a machine wasnt common, people with home version had to work alittle harder to get pads and versions, and the initial idea was still fresh.

DDR doesn't need more songs, it needs a serious renovation. Something on a gameplay level, instead of a content level. But most everyone would disagree with me, they just want 11 footers and more songs.

I'm a 'newbie' in this whole DDR craze, started earlier this year in fact. I never really caught on to the first wave of machines, since I got started late. Wish I could relate though, seems like good times. Freestyling all the way! I think that whole concept got me initially hooked. Of course I had to familiarize myself with the game itself first, which is a daunting task when everyone ahead of you is doing 'heavy' and I was struggling on 'light'! We need more freestylers! Yeah I agree, way back in the days when Dancing Stage Euromix 1 was released (In the UK) going to London was something special. There was freestyling, people acting silly and watching people play Paranoia Rebirth was like a real achivement. Also down my local arcade EM1 was real popular by girls, I'd only wished I played and mastered Expert/Maniac in those days, I'd impress em pretty well! Also DDR was really the only dancing game we had before all the EZ and PIU came along! The Euro Licenced songs were too slow to play on, making them not so popular to play on.

Now all I see happening and it's all the fault of whoever created the songlist of Euromix 2, Steps! 5,6,7,8 and Stomp, these two lame and sickening songs are now Gods of DDR in our country. I hate Steps and the trouble with society these days in the UK, people only like whatever is published in the papers or hyped up, and not the quality of the music!
In London now it's 5,6,7,8 on Beginner/Standard by lots of hyped up losers! Plus it's giving the arcade a huge audience, and I'm bored of the entertainment. People only watch just for the music!

Still Namco Station which has Extreme pulls in a little better in entertainment value, only the hardcore players are on this and they do stuff like Oni and PA'ing which is an achievment, but pulls in little audience sometimes cos the music doesn't appeal to them.
In my local arcade most people play PIU cos it's so cheap, and DDR has sortof moved on now, so doing Maniacs and trying to impress people is like "Welcome to 2 years ago, seen it, done it"

I remember when all I cared about was freestyle. I didn't care about PA. Now, there doesn't seem to be many freestyle tournaments around. If freestyle was as popular as it was back then right now, I'd probably be as focused on freestyle as I was in the past.

I'm guessing PA means perfect attack. I can't do that, and my freestyle skills are limited. My old days include being happy that i could pass cutie chaser on basic, and thinking (seriously, when i got konamix, this is what i actually thought) that if you could pass dead end on maniac, you had to be the best. Now i see the family max's, people AAAing stuff, and i can pass max 300 on standard, and almost everything on heavy. I don't have too many good old days, but many good new days to come as i incorporate FS into my dance.

I blame people's lack of coordination/rhythm on the lack of freestyling ability and the fact that freestylings basically dead on all aspects and roads. And basically most guys that dont apply themselves suck at dancing and that their FS routines are limited to a comedy routine instead of an actual dance/rhythm related routine.
************************************************************
THOUGH the good old days/times?

Those were the days when I was first starting. Now it seems like everything has to be perfect and single digit greats on a song isnt enough for me anymore. Seems to me that only AAA'ing 2 songs isn't enough for me anymore.

The good old days and times was when I was first starting DDR. Definitely so.

Just like sk8boarding the time when I first started was when everything came to my head that this was a fun sport to get into. Same correlation to DDR and the same aspect. That's just for me though the time that I first get into it. The times when I pass a song for the first time. Those are the good times for me.

Down in SoCal i see tons and tons of friggin good PAers but FS skillz arnt that great alot of people fockes on comedy and not dancing no more
But thats where CAS comes in we specialize in busting out dance moves with pop n locking ,hip hop ,rump shaking(The girl in our group) and even some breakin so i just hope we can help bring back what FSing is all about.

In my time of playing (since November 2002) I have only seen like 2 freestyles, mostly consisting of just hand plants and knee drops, but one had a matrix walk. My friends and I try to bring back the freestyle scene in these parts, but DDR isn't even that big here, so it has had no real effect.

Up with freestyle! thumb.gif

man oh man...... last time I was at my arcade was a weird experience. We've got an Extreme machine right next to DDR USA. Everyone was lined up for Extreme, and once on you were basically playing against someone who only played 180 BPM+ songs on heavy. It's really not fun. The songs aren't interesting to listen to, and they always let the timer count all the way down before playing so instead of only listening to CSFILSM for 1.5 minutes, you listen to it for 4 minutes. It's just not enjoyable for me. So I wandered over to the USA machine (which only had one side working at the time) and played on standard (which is basic or light on a Japanese mix). I played Dub-I-Dub, End Of The Century, Stomp To My Beat and gave my last play to another guy who did a great freestyle to Dynamite Rave (our USA mix is set to 4 songs per game). It really WAS more fun! I wasn't just having nostalgiac memories! What was more fun about it? Well, once you start playing out of the 6 footer range, you're really not dancing to the music anymore, it gets to be more like frantically shuffling your feet around. Bouncing around to the beat is just more fun. Freestyling is also great. You really can't do turns and kneedrops at breakneck BPMs such as LoM. Play on an easier setting. It's not as frantic, you might find yourself falling in love again.

I hear you guys on that one. Usually the problem with the people back where I was from, it was all about PA and/or competition, so when people try to push you, while it's good for your skill, I find it less fun, so sometimes I'll go back to lighter songs for the fun of it. Fun to listen to, and sure, the steps can be easy, but once you're good to the point where you can add your own touch, freestyling or just actual dancing, I feel that's where the fun comes in, not who's the best. To me, DDR isn't about competition, Virtual On has that place in my heart.

Heck, last night, since it had been almost 3 weeks since I played on real pads and have been practicing mad with Stepmania, I had a hard time playing the normal 8-footers with my feet, so I had to go back and try to get my groove back. I bought up a crowd when playing Afronova and Angelic Mix both on light, just because I was actually dancing around the place, not shuffling my feet. Butt-shaking, spinning, fluid motions, and to me, that's where the fun came from. Of course, there's not many people in Pueblo, so thankfully they don't provoke, push, or pressure you to do a certain song.

If anything, I just play to shake my groove thing and probably look like a fool at the same time.

im starting the freestyle revloution here in Jax. Help out your community by bringing back freestyle where you live. Its so easy to do. PA has become a serious mental illness effecting more than 50,000 ddr players across the US. Dont let you or someone you know fall victim to this. To help pull a few spins, c-walk, even in serious cases matrix walks have been nessicary. Side effects from freestyle may include, minor to major dizzyness, true 1337ness, all the honeys wanting you, and being really cool. For more information download A-Team videos and watch for cool moves to pull yourself.

the old days were awesome. 3rd mix holds a special place in my heart because it was the mix I learned on. I remember when hardly anybody could do SSR and it was amazing to be able to play SSR. and I remember when everybody was struggling to pass trick songs. good stuff. I miss the old days.
