Hi,

I'm thinking about getting a Flip-Top for my PS2 ((Thanks Nugget! E1.gif)) and I have one question that I don't think has come up yet:

Does the CD-Tray motor still work once the Flip-Top is installed? Like, if I'm trying to play an original NTSC game, can I skip all the swapping, and just push the eject button to boot up a game normally?

TIA! riiight.gif

now, i know this has been covered before, but i just want a definitive, clear answer:

If i have a flip-top, and a Gameshark 2 version 2, i can play psone games, correct? Assuming that is correct, I've heard stories about how 5th mix has anti-mod protection requiring ninja-like swapping of disks 2 or 3 times. Would i have to do this with a flip-top and gameshark? If not, is the procedure:

1. insert gameshark
2. put in anti mod codes
3. swap disc when told to using flip top
4. dance around as the game loads successfully?

Like i said, i know that these have all been answered separately, but getting one definitive answer for all these questions I'm sure would help me and a lot of others considering the flip top mod.

Whoever answers this will be my personal messiah.

Yeah, you can just load U.S. games normally through the cd tray as you had before. The fliptop doesn't get in the way at all.

Btw, I just installed my fliptop today. It was pretty easy to install, and it works flawlessly, boots anything I've tried so far.

I don't want to stir up anyone's hopes here, but Slashdot published an article over the weekend detailing one guy's successful efforts to trigger a buffer overflow exploit in the PS2, enabling the console to run arbitrary code.

This could lead to the ability to load *any* game disc, provided that you have a PS1 memory card, a corresponding PS1 game to load the exploit (currently the code is only set up to work with C:SotN and Chrono Cross), and a way to get the file onto your memory card (DexDrive).

I haven't tested this myself, so I don't know what the exploit's current state is, but it's highly likely that there will be a chipless boot mod in a matter of weeks.

Here's the story, for those interested.

*UPDATE 8-21*

after reading the forums on ps2ownz.com, i see that the chipless mod for ps2independence will work for homebrew code loaded from the memory card. However, according to the users of that forum, which are most likely far more informed than i, said that backups and imports could not be booted with this method; it simply can't be done. I guess we're better off with our flip-tops.

I second Doctor McNozzle's question; I am still extremely confused as to which Gameshark/Action Replay I need to play PSX imports on my PS2 E19.gif

EDIT: I remember seeing that the GS-CDX does not work and the GS2 for PS2 does not let you input the needed antimod codes. So what about this one? I believe it is the GS Lite for the PSX.

Well, they're basing all of this off the idea that there's no real way to circumvent the hardware interrupt given by the disc eject button.

So, with that in mind, the aim from here is to run the exploit on a PS2 with a connected internal, FireWire, or USB Hard Disk, and run software from *that*.

In other words, run ISOs from the disk, kind of like the Xbox and XCommander.

Well I ordered my Fliptop on Friday evening from ps2fliptop.com and it came today! Installation was a breeze! The instructions that came with the thing weren't very helpful at all, but I used that FAQ site that was posted in this thread, which was extremely useful. I had a little bit of trouble propping out the white disc from the original case ((I accidently cracked it riiight.gif)) and squeezing in the power/reset wire at the end, but everything still works E4.gif

Unfortunately, my Gameshark doesn't come until later this week, but at least I'll be ready for it when it does arrive. Thanks to all those who posted about their Fliptop experience!!

i needed some help with an import mod and i figured this would be the right place to ask. i bought 5th mix jpn and i got a psx change 1 and when i try to play it works for about ten seconds then it says that the system has been tampered with and to call this number if you have any problems. i was wondering if i used an earlier version of the psx(i have a model number 90xx i guess because i dont have a parrallel port)if it would work or if it would be safe to call the number (arent these things illegal?). thanks for the help.

I just tried for 3 hours strait to get the DVD SwapMagic disc to work and to no avail. My PS2 doesn't like reading games but with a few tries it will read them. The DVD Swap cd WILL NOT WORK frust.gif .What happens is when it reads it, In the browser screen it comes up as a gold cd and when I click on it it goes to a black screen for 8 secs then returns to the browser screen. Thats whats been happening for the past 3 hours (sounds like a rockin party, huh? laugh.gif ). I tried the Swap CD cd and that works with a few tries but unfourtanatly ParaPara is a DVD game.

Can anyone help me? E19.gif

I got a quick question that I didn't see answered on the front page:

If I just go and buy an import ps2, then It will play both import PS2, and import PS games, just as a US PS2 would, with US PS/2 games?

That's how I play my imports...I actually buy the imports on a real Japanese PS2! That's the legal way, AKA the expensive way, but it's the only 100% sure way to always have imports played with no problem with modchips and whatnot. There's just something about not ripping off game companies that makes me feel good.

OK problem: I just bought an Action Replay for my PS2 witht he intentions of using it to play Pop'N Music 8. When I put the disc in it said Disc read error. I know sionce my PS2 is an early model, its disk drive is defective and I was going to ship it out to be fixed but havent gotten to it yet mainly since my mom threw out the piece of paper with the info. When the cd did work, i said Insert A PS/ PS2 game. Am i doing something wrong? Does Action Replay not work for PS2? Is it just my disc drive thats messing it up? Thanks to anyone who helps!

Since the Action Replay isn't an official Sony product, Datel doesn't have the ability to use Sony's proprietary copy protection mechanisms during the disc mastering process, so they have to do their best to mimic it.

As you can see, it doesn't always work that well. It affects GameShark users too.

Ughhh more problems. Ok, the action replay wrked after a while so I tried the homebrew slidecard methind, hit X...and nothign happened. Would this be because its not an Action Replay 2 but an Action Replay one (though its meant for PS2 just to clear thigns up) or could it be my drive again?
