As you know, videos have been down for quite some time because our old host dropped us. This is a bigger problem than most of you realize, who do not have experience running high bandwidth servers. I need to find a video hosting solution that is affordable (hopefully free, but I am willing to negotiate) and able to accommodate the traffic involved. The minimum bandwidth I need is 10Mbit/s (don't bother quoting me in GB/mo--10 Mbit/s will be used constantly), and I am willing to limit simultaneous downloads and/or bandwidth per user if necessary. I am also okay with using my own server if necessary. If anyone out there owns a high bandwidth connection (i.e., not cable, not DSL, not school connection, and not hosts that offer "unlimited bandwidth") of 10 Mbits/sec or greater, please contact me at [email protected]. _________________

How about looking into BitTorrent? It's kind of a P2P app that swarms the download from all available sources. Check it out. That might just do the trick.

You wouldn't be able to fit all the videos onto one account (you only get 100 MB of space), but it gives you unlimited bandwith, so that's a big plus. I have no idea what their transfer rate is though, so I can't help you there. _________________

There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth. I will update my headline to reflect this. _________________

Did some research... these .torrent files still need to be saved on a server, right? In which case, if all the .torrent files were on our server, it would still consume a great deal of bandwidth. Is this correct? _________________

Yes, you need .torrent files, but from what I've seen, they're just a very small description of the file to go get. I don't think they're any more than a couple of kilobytes, if even that.

BitTorrent is not optimal for serving videos as has been done on here.
BitTorrent is targetted for large files, or groups of files. Thus, it's worked for Tournamix because they have packs that have averaged around 100 megs each, as I recall.
Most people downloading the videos here are cherry picking the top 3 for a particular tournament, or looking for particular songs or players. Forcing them to download all the videos for each tournament is a waste of bandwidth, and torrenting each individual file ruins the purpose of doing it distributed style anyhow. How many people would honestly seed a single video past when they download it?
I love BitTorrent, but it's not the panacea to every bandwidth problem ever. _________________

After reading the terms of service of that 1asphost.com, I disagree with PostBjork and anyone that agrees with him.

Jason:
I have a dedicated server that is 100% mine.
It is a gameserver at the moment, but runs a Half-Life mod that isn't widely played (no CStrike or anthing).
So it is not used to much.
I have 900GB a month total, and after I look up my current use I can estimate how many videos I can hold (and in addition, if you can give me an estimate on how many GB this server used, I'd appreciate it).
Thanks! _________________

10 megabits/sec * (60 sec / 1 min) * (60 min / 1 hour) * (24 hours / day) * (31 days / month) * (1 gigabytes/8192 megabits) = 3200+ GB/mo
Like I said... if your units of measurement are GB/mo, it's huge. Thanks for the offer though--900GB is a lot in terms of web hosting, but it's small for videos. _________________

Excuse the n00bie here,
could you not have mirrored servers, seeing as to how one simply cannot handle the load that you require? I'll gladly offer up jxBB's (my domain's) services, however, I don't have much to offer. |

It's not like it'd be detrimental to try the bit torrents. There's a web video series I watch called Red vs. Blue and they get along fine torrenting their 15MB files.
It's at the very worst a temporary fix, but it's still a fix. |

Wow, that's a lot of GBs. Might I suggest possibly not putting up all the videos you have? You could have a group of videos up for like a month or whatever and then update the videos page with new videos and just back up the old vids on a cd or something. Hope my suggestion is useful. _________________

Ok small correction. I have been informed that 1.5 TB/mo *might* be sufficient enough for video hosting. _________________

You may want to go with Rackspace, they have up to 4TB of Bandwith, 36TB of Storage, enough for file hosting, and custom bulit servers bulit you your needs.
But i would warn you that this will probably will be costly if you bulid and finance one yourself. But since you pay for your own website, you might want to try these people out.
http://www.rackspace.com
But then again from reading from your first post, your bandwith needs will probably make you pay more for those servers. Unfortunally i doubt that a 10mb upload speed would do suffucent, and quotes saying around $119 on http://www.serverbeach.com for only 900GB of Bandwith.
What is actually your budget anyway, that may help you find the right hosting that you need. |
