I understand that, but 2 days ago it was crawling at even this hour.
So long as I can still search my old posts, I'm fine. |
Sometimes when that happens, I've alerted blue^ and he's had to restart a certain resource (I can't remember which one was the culprit) and *boom* things went back up to speed again.
So yes, that issue is at least being watch by blue^.

I've disabled search for now. We'll see if this helps anything. It seems to have gotten better so far. _________________

It seems to be a bit better. Still noticeably slower than at other times...but it's improved, at least. _________________

I actually used the search feature :-/
but if it makes the server faster, then i'll do without it. Yay, pages actually load now, before I kept getting that annoying, "error, website not responding" shit but its much better now. |

Its much better. J Dogg do you know how many people actually used the search feature? Also what times is DDRfreak the busiest? _________________

Heh, and here I was just coming to complain about site slowness. Suddenly my 30-second load times don't seem so bad. At least everything has always worked for me.
How many users do you have at peak hours anyway? If that's the only problem (and not a server issue), then maybe you could look into new forum software, or at least upgrading this one. |

Hm, for people who used search, maybe I can make it so that it is enabled at non-peak times only.. _________________

The taking out the search feature has helped me. I can finally reach Random Chat with no problems at all. There are some minor problems, but other than that, I'm able to use the forums with no problem at all. _________________

The problem that I have been having is that it has been taking forever to load avatars and sigs and emoticons etc. |

I use the search feature occasionaly, and I haven't noticed any difference in speed between when it was enabled and disabled. I'm on the forums at roughly the same time(s) every day. |

i never searched for anything, but i did use the View Your Posts, probably every day, and was one of the most useful things to me. could you maybe re-enable view your posts, while still disabling other search forms? _________________

The disabling search thing really hasn't helped me all that much, either. _________________

Sorry, I can't really tell the difference disabling the search feature has made. It's all fast right now but earlier today it was pokey slow as we've come to expect - and the search was off at the time.
I do like being able to look up my old posts, and it's also useful to view other's posts from their profiles as well. I've rarely searched for specific words and when I did the results were usually useless.
If the search is to be enabled a few hours a day, may we know which ones?
Also, this is probably a phpBB thing and nothing you can fix, but here goes: When searching for one author's posts, the system makes a delay proportional to the length of time the user has been a member. A couple months back, we tried to find BoD's first post on a dare of sorts, and the server would not return an answer.
But, looking up specific posts or topics is relatively quick, once you actually have the number in your address bar. Would it be possible to index one's posts in a file specifically for that user to speed up the searching for these posts to near-immediate speeds?
Example of file:
Drenchfur: Joined Feb 28 2003
#1 p=5826485
#2 p=5830115
.
.
.
#604 p=7164806
#605 p=7164991
Final note: If searching though "all posts" and our current P postvalue is around 7.16 million right now (and growing) this search problem is only going to get worse as time goes on.
Not picking on anyone here. This is a interesting problem! |

From what I understand, they moved all the posts from 3 months back to a separate database.
Search feature won't be any fast, but at least index load will. |

I always get a large delay between the moment I click on a link, cuaisng the browser to start "loading" the next page, and the moment the page actually starts loading (if nothing but gray shows up first, it preceeds that). It's pissing me off and making me feel less like going to this site. |

Please, could the admins re-enable the search feature. its absence seems to have no effect on speeding things up anyway, and the lack of the View Your Posts option is really bugging me, and several others more and more every day. i have to sit and dig through threads to find things i've posted in rather than going to a single page with all the threads i've posted in. really, i used this feature all the time, and its bugging the hell out of me now that i cant. Please, re-enable it. _________________

I honestly haven't been experiencing the problems that others have since search was disabled and the posts were purged. Outside of the occasional peak hour slowdown (which isn't even close to bad anymore), I am getting speedy responses constantly.
Makes me curious if I'm the exception or the rule. If I'm the rule, then these people might want to take a look at their ping times. If I'm the exception, I'm not complaining. _________________
