Hey guys, I have a lot of time on my hands this summer, and I know this is going to sound pretty dumb initially, but I think I want to make a Pop'n Music "ASC" for myself. ANYWAYS, I saw this auction on YJ while I was messing around there, and it was for Pop'n 6, 7, and this guy's custom Pop'n Music controller. Here's the part you guys are gonna laugh at though: I've been playing for less than a month. I can already tell that this will be my favorite Bemani though, I initially started to branch out from DDR, and I already love it. I'm not great, but I'd really like to make a controller. I could probably afford an ASC, but I'd rather make one because I feel it would be more rewarding. It'd make a good project, and I'd like to try. Anyways, does anyone have a machine's dimensions for the controller? How about the Pop'n ASC? Also, what controller stuff goes where? Hell, any help would be good, so anyone who's had any experience building IIDX controllers, DDR, and (especially) Pop'ns can help me out. Here's some pictures of what he had, and of the ASC, etc.

I'm not shooting for any look in particular, but I would like to get the size sorta accurate. I may go for anything for the casing, buttons, etc., but I would like some sort of color either on the buttons like the home controller/home ASC, or around them like that dude's home-made one. Thanks a lot guys, hope you can help biggrin.gif.

-What skills do I need to make one? Will it involve soldering, incredible electrical knowledge, etc?

Okay, but I didn't figure that it would be very useful there... You don't see the custom DDR Pad topic in just a random DDR thread, do you? Since it is pretty much a separate topic, and I believe I am following the rules by posting it here, as well. I don't see why you should have an issue about me making a thread on it though o_O...

I quote from this sections FAQ:

Quote:
The Sticky Policy

If there's a sticky about a game, please talk about less specific topics, ask n00b questions, etc. there. Examples (I'm using IIDX, since I'm most familiar with that):

Stuff that would go in a sticky:
"I played IIDX today, and it's awesome!"
"IIDX is hard!"
"I just got my first AAA!/What's a good song to try to AAA?"

Stuff that could get it's own topic:
"Give me tips on how top play 1 handed!"
"Should I play with my controller in my lap?"
"What's the differance between the arcade and the home controllers?"

I believe my topic is quite similar to the third example of the stuff that should get it's own topic biggrin.gif . I think this is okay, and I will continue to do so unless a moderator tells me otherwise. Thanks.

Well now, I think that statement pretty much justifies this thread. PepsiBlueOwen wins this round.

I'll post up measurements when I get off from work today.

Good fight, and good night!

Sorry dude, no hard feelings... I'm just a bit newbish here and I thought you weren't kidding, but it doesn't really matter since this is just the internet... Or something like that. Anyways, I'd really appreciate the measurements, and I found the button setup on my Pop'n 7 (8 should have been here by now -_-), and I'll post it since I'm hoping other people will want to build Pop'n ASCs too! The "diagram" is up!

Here we have our totally sweet Pop'n ASC! Wow! I gave the buttons letters for easier controller-thingy distribution.. Or whatever you want to call it. Let's call the white button on the far bottom left letter "A", and the yellow, one space over, "B". I keep on going down the controller like this assigning the letters to the buttons, making the final white on the end letter "I". Think you got it? The middle red is "E". Let's move on! biggrin.gif (my favorite smilie biggrin.gif!)

Okay, now I'll give each one the correct distribution on a standard Sony Playstation or Playstation 2 gaming console.

I think I got this right, I just checked and this should be okay! The image is now up!

Actually I don't think he was kidding, I meen, when most people are wrong they don't like to admit it, and it wasn't a very funny thing to kid about anyways... but, that's besides the point.

Yeah, if you make a good pop'n music controller, make sure to write down instructions on how you made it. People seem to be willing to pay for instructions, or at least pay people to make them controllers, since nobody wants to pay the rediculous price for the ASC.

Um, actually, I wasn't wrong. You see I said "We have a Pop'n Music thread for a reason." That was only implying he should use it. Then he merely said "Well this is possible to do" so I said "I was only kidding" because I was being sarcastic.

Then I remember how much sarcasm is recognized on the internet. =p

Uh, I'm not sure it matters... This is the internet. Anyways, if I can make my controller look and play good, I may take it upon myself to start a small buisiness making them, but right now I only want to get seriously started on mine. What I think I need to do next is buy one of those mother freakingly ghetto controllers for like PSX and get some soldering done. I'm going to do it on the same principle like the DDR home pad and his arcade-controller-making buddies do. I'll need to buy the iron and some solder, which I believe is easy to find. I will probably buy a cheap, low-watt iron from Home Depot, and some Solder from radio shack as that was what was recommended. I'll then need some wire, and I cannot remember for the life of me where I'll get this, but I'll check around for a bit. That may be the easy part though; designing the box and buttons sounds a lot harder. There is no way in hell that I am shelling out $80 plus to some website for some Pop'n buttons; oh no. I'm going to somehow come up with some good-looking ones on my own lol. I really am digging that YJ guy's controller style and button shiznit, so I may start to copy that. With any luck, mine will turn out almost as good, 'cept I don't think I'm going to try to make mine light up unless it's a lot easier than it sounds. I've gone about 36 hours without sleep now, and it's getting hard to read the screen, so it's bed-time for this caffine-ladden teenager, but I'll try and get the iron and stuff and post updates tomorrow.

Um... think about this. You are making your own controller so you don't have to pay 400 bucks for the ASC. 80 bucks isn't that bad really.

No, $80 is not too much on the scale. But $80 is an f-load of cash for 9 pieces of plastic. I bet I can find some quality buttons that are comparable to the official Pop'ns for a lot less.

YEAH RIGHT. E15.gif

I seem to remember someone posting that they made their own Pop'n controller... I was thinking SuPa, but he has an ASC, doesn't he?

Erm... I'll dig through the Pop'n thread later; I'm sure that's where I saw it. Maybe the Controller FAQ thread, too. However, since I'm not sure it was here... carry on.

(And if this works out, make sure you post instructions. I can already tell I'm going to want to do this, too biggrin.gif)

I think tr4il was the one that made his own controller. I can't remember either. Looks like I forgot to post the measurements for the ASC riiight.gif . I swear I'll remember when I get home tonight.

You'd better E13.gif . Anyways, I got a soldering iron today, for $9.99 at Radio Shack. It's a dual-watt thingy that does 15 W (the heat you need for electronics) and 30 W which is like hard-core industrial strength. I bought 2 containers of Rosin-Core solder, which was Radio Shack brand (I believe) for $1.50 a piece. I also bought some hook-up wire for soldering to the cheap-o controller which I also found there for $9.99. I will post pictures of all of this stuff as soon as I can, but I've got a buddy over so it might not be till tonight.

-CStar, glad to hear you like it, as soon as it's done and styling, I'll give you instructions for making one your own! Hope you love that Pop'n Best Hits!
