So...wait...do they mean DDR, or not? For all we know, I could be ready to freestyle Cartoon Heroes, and they only have PIU machines. _________________

Rumor mill states that the machines are Solo 4th mix machines, but we're waiting for more confirmation on that before saying it as a definite. I also remember seeing that the competition was 18 and over only.
You wouldn't be doing freestyle for this competition - it's score based only according to the web site. _________________

Since perfects just adds to the score, I would assume so. Unless they have some new system where it's just hits, instead of how accurate they are.
Which means in theory, it might be easy to AAA any damn song!

Well seeing how Chicago is the first stop on the "tour" on Monday, we'll probably give people a heads up as to what to expect.
Hopefully this won't suck.....but I have the odd feeling it will.....no offense to Praster... |

Heh. Exactly what I'm thinking about, too. Man, this sounds like a pretty easy comp. |
um, well if this is on Solo 4th Mix machines, Kick the Can won't be enough, since the scoring system gives you more points for a higher combo. FC the 433-step Paranoia Rebirth instead. _________________

I'm not so worried about the scoring system (score attack is fair enough in my book), but I am concerned about a few things:
What are the organizers thinking, holding competition from 4 to 9pm(at least that's what was said on the non-ABC family site)? The organizers must not think that they will get a big turnout or obviously don't know how long a tournament can last with only 50 people, much less a few hundred. But then I'm considering that we're playing DDR, which brings me to:
What is meant by "dance machine"? For all I know, we could be playin g on a PIU, a Para Para, a Dancemaniax, anything! Heck, we could be stuvk doing Britney's Dance Beat or *ack* Spice World, but I wouldn't think so since it's a dance "machine".
*end gripe*
I have to apologise if I'm wrong with any of my conceptions. I'm viewing this with a WebTV, so I can't view the ABC Family page that would probably address all of my concerns (can't load flash on this WebTV ). I would really appreciate it if someone cut + pasted what info is on the ABC page. Thanks in advance. _________________

"The Dance Fever Mall Tour features the ultimate dance machine contest, live DJs, prizes, music, and more!
Whether you're a dance machine master or a newbie, come join the dance machine party! With six exclusive Dance Fever dance machines, this will be a contest like no other. All you have to do is step on the dance floor and follow the rhythm to a pattern of arrows. Scoring is based on step accuracy. If you're good enough, you could be the one lucky winner from your town to win a VIP trip for two to the Dance Fever Wrap Party at MGM GRAND's world famous Studio 54 in Las Vegas!
And there's more... We'll have a main stage with a live DJ dance party, celebrity appearances (in select markets) by Carmen Electra, MC Hammer, Jamie King, and Eric Nies, plus the chance to win great prizes hourly.
With a party like this, you won't want to miss a beat.
Rules available at event site. " |

let me just say, that whole premise is retarted. This seems like "Look, nerds meets MTV's grind"
Quict fact: Did you know that a Dance Machine + celebritys = fad?
Yea this is bad, there will probably be a strong 'youth movement' in DDR and PIU after this show. Not to mention this is only portraying half of the DDR / PIU community. There is no freestyle. I dont think ABC sees the potential to have a "DDR Idol", but the better haf of me says thats for the best. The evil half says "damn it, i cant get on the show, cuz i suck at Technical, i wish i could enter and get on TV ".
Not to mention this is score based. Although, perfects are a large factor in the score, depending on the mix (providing they use DDR) is also based on combo and other factors.
Also, let me mention licensing. im sure ABC has or will have its hand full with licensing due to the fact DDR doesnt really legally exist in the states. That will also, possibly make ABC pro PIU. I Dont know if konami will care due to the massive publicity that DDR will get if they use that. _________________

I can just envision them using DDR USA or DDR 1st Mix for this tournament. |

Thank you Spoonsman.
I understand your concern for DDR becoming a fad. The same anxiety was expressed before DDR appeared on the Early Show on CBS, but I haven't seen an increase in local players after the show aired, so I guess the appearance on a national program didn't do too much to boost popularity. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I don't get your quip on licensing. Konami has released a few american DDR games, and can license those games to ABC without messing with Konami of Japan (of course that means "Let Them MOOOOVE!", instead of "Come on everybody let's kick the can..."). If ABC does use a Japanese DDR machine, then we'll probably hear about the multi-mllion dollar lawsuit the day after.
Then again, we don't even know if we're playing on a DDR machine, much less any music-game that we are familiar with. "Dance Fever" could be a bad DDR rip-off developed by ABC for the show.
I'm looking forward to hearing how things go on Monday. Good luck to all of the Chicago players! _________________
