|
|
Story time! Today I had my first arcade experience since I got DDRMAX for PS2 a few months back. In other words, my first experience since I got semi-good. There's no DDR in a 50 mile radius where I live, so trips to the arcade are few and far between. Anyways, I was at the arcade in Seaside, OR, playing DDRUSA with my brother.
We were getting ready to leave, so we decided to just do a few last hard songs we hadn't tried yet. We went through Jam Jam Reggae, End of the Century, difficult stuff like that which Max doesn't have. Of course these songs are somewhat frantic, and we got a bit of a crowd, with one lady standing out inparticular. We had this middleish age woman cheering up on, saying stuff like "go baby go!"
After we were done with our songs I got off the machine and she said what me and my bro did was "fabulous and sweet," which is cool, right? She said she really liked watching us, and she wanted to watch us again, so we went through some more songs, like Afronova, Dynamite Rave (each on standard- we were both in sandals), the Paranoias, stuff like that. After playing like 3 songs she actually put five one dollar bills in my hand because she said she would pay to watch us dance. After 3 more my bro and I were both sweaty and tired, so we were ready to quit. I took the 5$ and tried to give it back to the lady, who had been cheering us on the whole time, and she wouldn't accept it. Then she started getting mysty eyed, on the verge of crying, maybe letting a few tears fall.
I was really confused at this point, but of course I felt bad. I tried to give her the money back but she wouldn't take it. Her husband came over and put her arm around her corner while she tried to not cry. My first thought was just that she was crazy and overemotional. When she walked away I was informed that she had recently had her daughter die in the car crash, and that she used to play DDR with her daughter. Ah.
So... that's my somber/weird and long DDR story. |

that's a sad story and i feel bad for her.....but did she expect you do dance all night?.........i would have asked her if she wanted to play along with me even since i didn't know about the tragedy.....i mean if someone's gonna offer to pay for your game, you should offer her to try it with you........i'm sure that would have made her day.......
poor woman, everytime she's gonna see a DDR machine, she's gonna think of her daughter......... _________________

wouldnt one assume that maybe "confronting" a ddr machine would be some type of psychological thing that would fix it.. i dunno, things like that are supposed to work. _________________

Hmm, wheres the lock when you need it? How pointless...
*reads the end*
WHOA. I retract my previous comments. That's... sad.
I know someone like that though... his fiancee died in a car crash right after she left an arcade playing DDR. For a while, he couldn't go to ANY arcades with DDR, because it reminded him of her way too much. After a while, the coping became easier, and he could go play again. It still gets to him occasionally... he broke down in tears after passing Legend of Max the first time... he said that she would have been so proud of him.
You handled the situation as best as possible, given the circumstances. _________________

("Kevyn what would you do?")
-Play?
-Give back the money?
-What the hell would you do?!
Knowing me and how much of a sucker I am for emotions...I would let the woman see my best free style to So In Love. Moves, foot work, pop everything. Just for her. I'd put up the show of a lifetime for her. try all the hard songs and give it my best ; all to make her smile and laugh and see her happy. How pathetic I am huh? _________________

It was a DDR USA, remember? No Legend Road, or any Oni courses on that mix. |

I think you handled that just as most people would have. Why not continue to play for free if a spectator wants to foot the bill? But yeah, there is a point where you would get tired - and you might wonder why this person insists on watching you - so the weird factor would also make me want to stop at some point.
You did not know about her daughter until she had gone. What were you to do? Call the woman back and hop back on stage? She probably doesn't want you to know of her pain, and wanted to reflect on her daughter privately while she could. I bet she has gone to that arcade quite a lot recently. Watching you made her happy for awhile. You did good. |

I think anyone would have. It sounds like Chadarnook didn't know this until afterwards.
At the same time, I also think that going back and playing more for her sake would've been interpreted as a pity move and as such insulting, so... _________________

I would dance until I die...And to think, I sat down and rest after 10 rounds of DDR in the theme park I went to... |

wow, i really feel like crying.
i'm very emotional myself also.
just to add to the ongoing rants that everyone said.
I probably would've freestyled for her also..too bad it wasn't a extreme machine though. _________________

Amazing how something like ddr, or watching someone play it, reminds her of her daughter... I think that woman should stay away from anything ddr related at all, it will just bring up the memories and then she'll never get over it. |

now that's a sad story. True it's wierd but still touching. I definately would've done an oni course for her at least (that is if it was an extreme machine) _________________

Awww! That's so sad...
Like everyone else, I probably would've played as much as possible. And given her a hug! Because hugs always make people feel better. _________________
