I've lost weight since I started playing. I always do the workout mode so the game doesn't reset after the last song. I always go as fast as possible in between songs to pick a new song (between 5-10 seconds).
But like Stephanie said, don't look at your clock to see how long you played, look at the timer on your screen, because you lose time in between songs. I always play until I reach an hour (about 45 songs).
Buy yeah, if your diet sucks, then your weight loss will be nill. I always drink 1-2 glasses of water before I play. And I drink at least 1 liter while I'm playing. (I sweat like a pig) |

Stephanie, you response strikes me as being logical and informed, but...I highly doubt that a 30 minute jog would be more effective than a couple of intense games of DDR (i.e. Max 300, LoM, etc.). According to the counter in the game I burn approx. 100 in 85 seconds of playtime w/ Max 300. To get that kind of workout running, I would have to sprint as hard as I could rather than simply jog.
To get to the point, I feel that DDR can be a good "compressed" workout, depending on what you can do.
My 2 cents, right or wrong. _________________

Not to go off topic here, but how really accurate is the calorie counter on workout mode? Is it pretty accurate, or just a general idea? I showed my sister it and she thinks the counter is way too high.
Another thing I do is not to play by the time counter, but how many calories I burn. I usually play until I burn about 1500 calories according to the counter. A lot of times I would like to play more, but my feet start to really hurt around that time. |

Doing fast songs like the max songs (heavy), or survivor songs (heavy), aren't going to make you lose weight. Depending on your heart rate, your body decides which kinds of calories to burn.
If you're playing Legend of Max, your body won't burn fat. Fat calories are for long-term energy. For example, for most people, jogging at approximately 4 mph is about the best you can do for burning fat. Your body isn't overworked, and thus can consistantly burn fat calories.
If you start to sprint, your body then taps into the sugar calories, which are for quick energy. You won't lose any weight by sprinting (Max/Survivor songs are easily the equivalent of sprinting).
High-Intensity workouts are good for muscle-toning (Running, Pushups, Weight Lifting, etc.), but bad for losing weight. I can look at my legs right now and see a definite improvement in overall muscle tone, but I still have some flab here and there due to the fact that I don't jog regularly, and I tend to play the faster songs in the arcade (160bpm+).
Best advice for losing weight through DDR:
Keep hydrated. Before you go to play, make sure you eat something that provides long-term energy, like Total or Raisin Bran. Don't eat Cookie Crisp. If you're worried about how your legs are going to feel the next day, always stretch AFTER you play. Stretching relieves gas build-up inside muscles, which is what causes them to hurt the day after.
I hope this makes sense. Oh, and Stephanie is right on. She's the first person I've seen post here about DDR & Health and was exactly right.

I hate to say it, but I think your sister's right.
But at the same time, if you're doing ghetto-freestyle, maybe you're burning that much-- but I seriously doubt it.
By default, your weight for calculating calories is... 100 pounds. Which means that the numbers it gives should be artificially *low*, because a person at a lower weight burns less calories doing the exact same thing as a person at a higher weight. And still, it seems to give about 1/10 kCal for each step and about 1/3 kCal per jump. This seems way, way too high to me.
Another thing to remember is that by default, it counts steps every time you register a step, whether it's in the steps or not. This wouldn't be bad, except that if you get any ghost-stepping or you register multiple steps without shifting your weight from the arrow and exerting no effort, man, your calorie counter's going to be totally skewed. Heh...
Although, I will say the calorie-counter is totally useful. It gives you some kind of quantification to what you've done-- even if it's totally inaccurate relative to anything else, you can compare it to what you did yesterday or whatever, so it's nice in that way. Just keep in mind that comparing your DDR-calorie-counter to any real measure of calories is liable to be misleading.

True. I always thought that this is also why so many people say that they first beat max/unlimited/whatever after eating rice/starch/pasta-- all the complex carbs go straight to sugars for the short term energy you need for that kind of thing. _________________

It's true that you can't lose weight from a session or 2 sessions of a 10 foot song such as Max 300. But that doesn't mean you can't lose weight on DDR. You can lose weight on DDR by playing 10 foot songs and continously playing DDR for a good amount of time. |

No, you honestly won't be losing fat if you're playing 10 foot songs.
Your body won't burn fat when you do those songs, it will burn sugar.
You won't lose any mass by burning sugar. |

jog 2 hours a week. play ddr 3 hours a day. on songs you usually cant pass, force yourself past your stamina limit everytime you play despite sweating and getting really tired. if you do this often you should lose more than 5 pounds. |

My advice? Learn to play doubles. From the doubles FAQ :
Quote: | It requires more stamina, and burns more calories. Simple physics fact:
By accelerating and deceleration your center of mass, you do a lot
of work, ad thus burn energy. Double requires far more center of mass motion
then single play (which when played well requires very little), and thus
burns more calories. |
There you have it |

No I meant you should play DDR for a long period of time and then you should add in a 10 foot song for good measure.
BTW: Sugar is the cause of weight gain. Fat doesn't really make you fat. Sugar is the real culprit. |

More specifically carbohydrates. Yeah, they suck.
And if you're overweight, you don't want to burn the sugars that you've already consumed. You want to burn the fat. Because it's making you look fat.

If you have sugar in your daily consumption, yoru body will automatically burn sugar only and not the fat. Therefore, lay off the carbs and eat teh meats and proteins instead w/ veggies and fruits for neccessary vitamins and such. This way your body will change metabolism mode to burning fats/ proteins instead of sugars and of course you must drink the dailiy requirment of water or more for max. effectiveness. Along w/ excercise and teh prescribed diet, your body will start burning FAT, because it has no sugar to burn. Burning fat is basically converting fat to sugar and burning the sugar. So you will loose fat overall and gain muscle. DO NOT EVER STARVE. |

So doubles is almost as good as jogging then, huh? Except for all the breaks. *^_______^*
Running is still owning DDR for *free* in my book, man.
And, dude, I don't "think's I knows everything." Hehe. Thank god for that.
