Being the female DDR freestyler that I am (and we are a rare bunch of girls), I'd help on this site in any way I could.
Also about posting threads about girls in DDR here @ DDR Freak ... there have been SO MANY of those in the almost 3 years I have been posting here, those are starting to make me sick.
L8z!

www.ddrgirl.com
The person who runs it I believe just held a tournament a while ago.
EDIT: I checked the site again, and it's more of a personal thing rather than the female ddr scene. Carry on. _________________

Bad idea. This is the reason that men and women still segregate themselves from each other. We already have enough T.V. channels that are just for women, we don't need DDR to be involved in the problem!
Furthermore, when you think things through, this a fu.cking arcade game we're talking about! Men and women never segregated themselves from each other during the time of Pac-Man and Tetris, please don't get these issues fired up again. |

While I don't want to go as far as say "it's a bad idea, don't do it" I do want to agree with Master of Darkness. The more emphasis on gender distinction there is, the longer it will last. I think that the reason there are so few female DDR players is purely social education of our women and not because of the physical differences. |

All the premise of the site is a good idea. I say go for it. Being that I am in a counting all the serious players, a 5 females in our area as opposed to double digits in guys. Banding together to support one another and give advice would be nice.

Such games as those don't have specific gender issues tied into them. For example lets say a bunch of fellow female DDR players wanna share information about the perfect bra sports bra for support for the songs with lots of jumps. But you understand my meaning. Traditional video games don't have problems or issues like that. I don't think the purpose of this site is to become ultra feminist and guy bash. Naaaaah. |
Hehe, you brought up one of the things I was considering doing in the fashion section. Sports bra reviews (or reviews of other bras that can work in their place when it's summer and you want to wear cute little strappy shirts) definitely have their place.
And really, I'm not meaning to start a huge male/female segregation here. Sure, there is only a separation anyway because we've all been socialized to believe that females first of all shouldn't play video games and second of all shouldn't do things to make themselves look silly or get sweaty, but simply saying "we're all one community, we don't need to divide" isn't going to get rid of that stigma.
Females as a whole have issues (such as sports bras) that are better to discuss in a forum where they won't be responded to with "why wear a bra? I prefer to see the bounce ". Besides, it's a way to get together and meet people, which helps out the community far more than any possible male/female segregation that could result. |

Okay... Here's my two cents...
It would be great for girls to get thier own site, because if they want it, they should get it. And hell, I've seen posts on this forum that plain down girls because of thier looks or what not. That's a buncha' crud really. Though I'm not for segregation, it's good to have a gender based deal because sometimes it helps to express things of gender-based nature in an environment where it's really accepted. So go do it! Either way, it has the potential to draw more females to the game. So far, I have not seen one girl in my cruddy town of Temecula that plays DDR as seriously as I do, nor do they want to try. The ones that get close already hooked up. God, I wanna' have a good routine with a girl, because it looks wrong to have two guys doing Mahao No Tobira, or Love Love Shine, or basically coupled songs... I don't even want to think about it!
Anyway, I would occationally drop by the site just to figure out what girls actually think, seeing it is impossible to understand a female with her complexities and what-not...

amen! Let's not forget something really important here-- boys and girls are different and that's a GOOD thing! I agree men and women should get equal status and all but girls have a different physical and chemical construction than boys so it's only natural that a game as athletic as DDR affects them differently. I think Maizie's got a good idea going...
Pretending that men and women are the same is where more girls get discouraged from playing-- Lots of times I've been close to quitting because I thought "I'm just not physically capable of the stuff my roommates can do" but I felt much better when I heard from girls who had similar gameplay issues and handled them well...
Plus I'd love to meet more girls who play so if it encourages more female players to stop just watching their boyfriends and actually get in the game then count me in too _________________

It's nice to have a community of people that share your issues and/or interests. It's just when communities are formed around ideals of superiority that it becomes a problem |

that is exactly what i was thinking!
and, in my area, there is like...um...er...uh....5 girls that i can think of that ive seen and were good....no make that 4, i counted myself and im the only girl that i know of that freestyles
compared to the at least 20 or so guys that hang around our Planet X, girls are rare...
But i have done a great deed for the poor fellows with no girls to play with, ive gotten at least 3 of my buds hooked, and 2 of them to buy it for home.....but most of them are too shy to get up there and dance with somebody other than me

I'm all for encouraging women to play, which is why I say if people want to do it they should, but DDR is not lifting heavy things (not that I think that women are terribly disadvantages with that either) it is a function of mental processing, learned weight shifting and strength to weight ratio (moving your own body around.) Sure on songs like LoM you start getting into pure endurance issues so women might have a longer time building up the endurance to do it. Sure you can brute force any song, but since there is so much of a mental and stylistic component to DDR I don't think that women are disadvanged. I think that the overweight and the clumbsy are going to have more trouble (I'm all three, female, overweight and clumbsy and I'm still passing catas.)
Encourage women to play, great. Talk about sports bras, great. Talk about the smaller number of women playing DDR meaning that there will be a smaller number of really good women, great. But comizerating on how disadvantaged women are at playing DDR, not great.
BEGIN SUPER RANT (this really is a rant, don't take it too seriously.)
Yes testosterone allows the male bell curve to be stronger, on average, than women over all, but I think that because women aren't expected to pull their own physically that they are weaker. I can out lift a bunch of men when carring TVs, pianos, furnature, etc, because I was raised to beleive that I could do it myself. And because of that I've been lifting things all my life and as such I am much stronger than most of the women around me. I don't think that it's genetics, and it certainly isn't good exercise (DDR is the only regular exercise I get) I think it's because I was encouraged to do what all the men around me were doing because we're just people. Sure that guy over there is going to be stronger than me because he's an athletic guy and testosterone helps muscle growth, but the other 20 guys around me, well their about the same strength as me and so why should I renforce the differences by being anything other than a person when I function just fine as a person.
Ok, I've ranted. Sorry about that. |
