My FAQ should answer most questions, but if you have any feel free to ask. Additional information and corrections are welcome to the FAQ.
The current modchip thread can be found here
YOU CANNOT PLAY IMPORTS/BACKUPS WITH ONLY A GAMESHARK ON YOUR PS2, YOU WILL HAVE TO OPEN UP YOUR PS2 IN SOME FORM USING A SLIDE CARD, FLIPTOP, MODCHIP, SOMETHING
ALL Flip top users refer to bottom of the guide for media info and what type of disk to use
I'm currently looking for LEGITIMATE sites that sell the products that I have listed Buy Rite games as having. Buy Rite games has received such poor feedback lately so buy from them at your own risk!
Gameboy/Pocket/Color/Advanced/SP/DS and Playstation Portable
Modchips
There is no need to mod any type of Gameboy or the PSP. The import games will play just like regular games
Gamecube
Modchips
No modchip exists for backups
Region Modification
A switch can be fitted to both US and Japanese consoles to let them switch between regions. Essentially this is a 'language mod', changing the system from thinking it is a Japanese or US region system. This is a simple mod, 2 wires and a switch. No such thing for PAL region.
Grade B+
Boot Disc
This boot disc is out now. It is called The Gamecube 3 in 1 Universal Converter. Insert the boot disc and switch with any region Gamecube game.
Available at www.buyrite.net
Grade A
Other
Memory Cards
If you have the mod / boot disc, you will need a separate memory card for Japanese game saves. US and European saves can exist on the same cart. This is because the cards 'format' themselves for the two regions
The Q
A universal system by Panasonic. Plays Region 1-6 DVDs, JPN and USA Gamecube games, VCDs, CDs, and MP3 CDs. Can be found at www.buyrite.net

Modchips
The Game Enhancer
(Also known as the Goldfinger and many other names)
An external modchip. Works on all Playstations, except Playstations without a parallel port (Playstations with model number 90xx or the PSone) User has to insert an original game and then swap the game for the backup or import when the disc stops spinning. Allows user to save gameshark codes and boot up codes on to the Game Enhancer. Can be found at www.modchip.com and www.consolesource.com
Grade A-
Instructions
1. There is a button that gets pressed down by a prong on the lid. Locate it
2. Tapes it down or do whatever you have to do to make sure it stays down.
3. Now with the lid open and the Game Enhancer in the back insert an ORIGINAL PS1 GAME FOR YOUR REGION.
4. Turn on the PS1. DO NOT CLOSE THE LID
5. Wait for the disk to stop spinning and then insert your Import or Backup. Be careful not to look directly at the laser. The laser is invisible and looking directly into it will cause eye damage.
6. Enter in any codes
7. Now choose the appropriate option to start the game. On the Game Enhancer it would be Start Game With Codes.
8.You can now close the lid if you want.
PS-X-Change 2
A boot disc. Works on all Playstation models, including the PSone. User inserts the disc then switches with the import or backup when prompted. Does not allow user to save gameshark codes OR boot up codes to memory card. It can get very tiresome to continuously have to enter in boot up codes for almost all games made past 1999.
Can be found at www.consolesource.com and http://www.gocybershop.ca
Grade B
Stealth Modchips
Internal modchips. Requires soldering. These are an 8 wire installation. Simple to install for an experienced solderer. Not recommended unless one knows what they are doing or know someone who does. Requires no swapping just insert the import or backup and play.
Can be found at www.chipzone.com and www.consolesource.com
Grade B+
Help Getting the Games to Run
There are two ways to get an original to run that won't run by just putting it in the console. One of the easiest would be to use a Gameshark and insert any necessary anti-modchip codes. Most of time this will solve your problem
However, every so often you can't find the Gameshark codes or don't want to spend the money on a Gameshark. Thus I suggest patching the game. It involves ripping the entire to your computer, applying a certain patch, and then burning the game to a CD-R. I don't recommend this as this is a very tedious process and the game can take up almost a gig of space on your computer.
Patches can be found at

Worst Way to Play Imports
Slidecard - Not only is it easily made from following a simple tutorial on www.ps2ownz.com so you dont have to pay an outrageous cost. It also effectivle over works the PS2 drive motor and the laser killing your PS2.
Detailed Legitimate modchips
This list IS incomplete
Please note that not every modchip listed play import originals please read the description to determine which modchip is best suited for you. I personally recommend having a no swap modchip installed, but that is just my experience.
Also note that if a modchip does not list your PS2 version as compatible or incompatible, it may or may not be compatible. Buy at your own risk.
Rip off!
PS2 Boot disc
Does exist but the name is very misleading. It just a replacement for the Gameshark that older modchips needs (Ex. NEO 2.2). IT IS A BURNED DISC AND REQUIRES A MODCHIP TO PLAY.

Legitimate modchips
Modchip series, such as the Messiah series and Magic, series are listed with the newest version listed first.

Taken from the FAQ above:
PS-X-Change 2
A bootdisc. Works on all Playstation models, including the PSone. User inserts the disc then switches with the import or backup when prompted. Does not allow user to save gameshark codes OR bootup codes to memory card. It can get very tiresome to continuously have to enter in bootup codes for almost all games made past 1999. Err, another difference between Magic 3.1 and 2 is that the 3.1's have sleep mode. Also, I'd like to recommend the Magic 3.1 and Messiah 2 Clones from http://www.evolutionmods.com as they are the only chips better than the originals Same source code, but with higher quality chips, and cheaper prices. I have the magic 3.1 clone, and couldn't be happier

Yes, the Magic 3.6 is a clone. I've heard that it's not that good either, and that the PS2 will freeze sometimes when playing games. |

Punctuation always helps. Observe: http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2002-10-11&res=l
And in answer to your question, I think a Magic 3.1 will work with your PS2 model.
By the way, I mentioned near the end of the first Modchip thread that I ordered the PS2 fliptop case. It still hasn't come in yet. It should come in sometime this week, I'll post the results on how well it works here. Though if what I've read is true, it should work just fine. |

Yeah, it was more like stealing graphing calculators.
Anyway, you might want to edit your post, The Swap Magic discs cannot boot import or backup PSX games. |

I asked cmcm if he'd mod my PS2, but I still havent gotten a response from him. |
I've told you like 30 times that PSX-Tech does a really good job. cmcm is having problems wit the law and they confiscated his computer. (No it wasnt for stealing PS2s) |
Oh man! And the fourth ddrei.com tournamix is coming up! I remember when he won the second one with Healing Vision ~half mix~. So whats he gonna do now? ( though I doubt making DWIs is first on mind )
I actually did return to this thread with a question though. I guess that my v2 PS2 has a DVD controller thats difficult to soulder. I guess it can't be done with just a normal souldering iron since the point is so small. Or something like that. I don't know which end of the iron to hold if I were to do it myself. Anyhow, does this only conern the Apple chip or will another chip ( 3.1 I guess ) be easier to install on an old PS2? |

Soldering is easier than people make it out to be. If you do decide to try it yourself, I would recommend you go to Radio Shack because they have a starter kit for 8 bucks and it teaches you everything you need to know. Also, if you do make a mistake, you can always buy some solder remover. |

Anyone else try it? I'm interested in playing import originals in the cheapest way possible with the least amount of modding possible. This sounds good to me. _________________

omg, i cant belive someone is actually selling those slide cards, you can make one yourself with an old credit card or some kind of hard thin plastic, and yes it does work with the swap magic disks.

Yes, I know, but the shipping to Cali would be a bitch, and I'm impatient. I saved myself some cash, and I heard from a bunch last night they do awesome jobs. _________________

You should've just ordered the installation+chip instead of getting the chip first. Also, shipping to PS-X Tech from VA was only $15 for me. |
