My home built metal DDR pad (Part IV)

Hey, I'm new to this homemade hard pad thing, and I have a few questions.

1 Whose homemade pad is the best and how long do they last?
2 Is it cheaper to build a homepad or to buy one?
3 Which will last longer, a home pad or a store-bought one?

Thanks in advance. I've gone through three crappy $25 soft pads, and I figured it'd be a better investement of my money to buy or build a hard pad.

I also pose another question. If I want to switch the PSX controller on a homemade pad and replace it with a PS2 controller, will I be able to follow the same instructions at the website and still get the same results?

About the controller. The GameStop or Pelican controller are the ones you see @ AngelFire. The diagram is only for these two controllers that I know of. I have opened a Mad Catz PS2 controller and the solder points are elsewhere.

If my theory works, and hopefully it can be confirmed on this thread, take two wires and hunt for the ground + Up, down, right, left and start select and X if you want the extras. Turn on your DDR game and ck to see where each direction is by placing a wire by the left directional pad and try to locate a ground.

I am not sure of this method so I would appreciate if someone with knowledge of this would leave mucho feedback on how to LOCATE GROUND AND ALL THE OTHER SOLDER POINTS On various controllers or generally speaking all PS2/PSX controllers.

I don't know if it was ever mentioned before or not, but I got this idea while working on my MAME cabinent.

What about using a I-PAC http://www.ultimarc.com/ipac1.html for inputs into a PC for DWI or Stepmania or whatever.

I'm going to give it a try when I get my cabinent done (this summer sometime). But I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. and you can even hook up 2 pads to one I-PAC.

If someone did this already, lemme know how it works.

Vid 3 and 5 (yep...) still not working for me... if I cat get them... I can host them... 50Kbs MAX.........

but.. 1 2 and 4 look great

and if you want something les expensive go on the website listed in my sig its a ******* good idea

using the "scrap" metal sheet for doing a corner brace

Ok i just bought some materials... some questions tho... can i get 7/16 inch thick Weatherstrip instead of 1/2 inch... Do i need tin snips to cut the sheet metal... how long is the Pan philips Screws in length... and i got dry wall screws that are 6x1-1/4... are those good.... and how big plexiglass do i need... and can i use .236 plexi instead of .22 BTW this is all for riptides pad

I screwed up when doing the wiring to the arrow panels and switched the ground (should be on the bottom) with the down/up/right/left wires (should be on the top). Will this change anything?

I started yesterday and did great! All i need to do is get the pushbuttons in... put the arrows on the plexiglass, and wire.... I dont understand the wiring at alll.... can someone explain it really simply

Buy Helping Hands from Radio Shack for 10.00. Buy a very small reel of solder and of course have the CAT 5 phone cable w/ 8 wires fr. Home DEPOT.

If I can do this so can you.

Buy a $5.00 Pen like soldering Iron from Radio Shack and that is all you need.

1. Open up your controller and save all your screws. Take out the board and clip it to your helping hands.
2. Take a 1/16 drill bit and drill not on the solder point but close to it. The idea here is that you want to stick wires from the bottom of the board through the small whole that is close enough to the solder point. Do this for all intended solder points Up, DWN, LFT, and RT.

3. Now for the NOs. Do not pull any wires that you want to remove. Do not drill directly on to the solder points and do not force the control when putting back together.

4. How to solder. This is tricky. Hold your solder pen onto the wire for a few seconds and add a bit of solder to the wire. Now place your solder gun to the solder point for a few seconds and add a tiny amount of solder. Now hold the wire steady onto the solder point with a bit of solder in one hand and melt the wire to the solder point. Be very careful! Do not get any solder anywhere else.

If you do buy a solder sucker...I am not sure of the name, but it is from Radio Shack.

I finished my pad!!... one problem.... the right and down arrows are a little bad... right double skips sometimes and i need to stomp on down.... what are some things u should do?
