You may find that the pad's rubbery bottom keeps it in place well enough on your rug.

Be careful with aluminum foil, because it can deform and hold a shape. You might try using double-sided tape to keep the foil flat against the circuit layer.

It still could be the cable. There is more than one wire in the cable.
If you have an old dead soft pad, just swap the entire controller & cable. |

Depends on your tastes I guess. I prefer the soft pad with hard foam over any hard pad. I like to play in socks. |
