They are usually built around (the electronics of) existing softpads or gamepads. Except mine, of course (I made the electronics myself for mine).

I would suggest substituting the plexiglass with wood, don't add sheet matal, and use a different and cheaper bracket system. that should cut the costs significantly and not affect performace, just ap ...
