Well, it's based off a DDR SIMULATOR.
I'm not really sure if that's relevant or not.
The problem is, how do we define "rip off"? You'd think that the point of a rip off would be to produce something so substantially similar that rides the coattails of the original; and yet the fans of each can be so adamant that the other sucks. That'd suggest that the similarities aren't substantial enough.

What I don't understand is, if Konami acquired the intellectual property of ITG, then why haven't they put in C-scroll mods?
That's how most acquisitions work. The people running the company that survived are inclined to keep doing things they way they've always done them, because in their mind, their way is the right way, since they "won".

Well I guess the line has been drawn in bemani between rip-off and genre. Bemani as a genre involves hitting some sort of button or enabling a sensor to a beat of a song. ITG is exactly the same as DDR (same arrows in the same spot on the same sized machine) except they also added more things. PIU on the other hand hasn't gotten sued even though it's almost the same. I guess they draw the line there, you just need to move the arrows around and maybe add one.

Anyway, I don't think I can evaluate this myself, since I am too biased toward ITG. In reality, I think ITG did a much better job than DDR, but I also understand that intellectual property isn't based on who did it better, it's who did it first. But for christs sake Konami blows at dancing games compared to Roxor. Supernova can f*ck itself for all I care. It's like they still think it's DDR 5th mix, making games for casual players who are bad and won't get much better, rather than catering toward the actual fans of the game who want to (and do) improve a lot, warranting harder songs (and the aforementioned custom songs) like ITG.

Edit: for what it's worth, I think 5th mix was amazing for its time, I love the step charts and such (I still love to play it). Konami just never progressed past this point (sure Extreme and such is a bit harder), whereas ITG took it to the next level.

DDR, hands down

ITG is too competitive, I like just having fun, with good music. disturb.gif

I know it's personal preference, but I and a lot of other people think ITG has great music. I would say that ITG and DDR are about equal as for music quality.

DDR and PIU both were originally released in 1998. Discression between who was "first" would not have been easy.

Roxor got sued because they used konami's machines without their permission and made money out of it, If they would have made their own machine from the start, konami could not have sued Roxor.

On topic: ITG because of the reasons LightningXCE listed

But for beginners, only the music matters, but techno has more chances of pleasing more people than 80s music and J-pop.

I dont know why people make such a big deal about something being a ripoff. EVERYTHING is a ripoff. Every song has been remade/stolen a million times, every good game has had a million copies of it, hell they have sprite, 7up, squirt, mountain dew, sierra mist, and probably hundreds of other 3rd party lemon-lime sodas.

With that said, DDR (extreme) is more enjoyable to play, but if you want to be competitive in any way or do something half-way physically demanding, you gotta play ITG.

Actually, even if Roxor used their own cabs, they'll still get sued. Konami have patents for the 4 panel genre. Sounds pretty poopy tbh.

Me? I dunno. I haven't played a lot of ITG to put a good enough judgement of it, mainly because the machine at the arcade I go to sucks.

Thanks for your replies, my project isnt just on bringing back In the Groove, i just wished that konami could actually put these rights to use like adding a usb slots, adding some different music (personal preference) and maybe making some challenging steps and the screen does help to be bigger. Also, alot of the machines I go to have crappy sensors I wish Konami could make better pads for there machines disgust.gif

Actually Konami's sensors are fine. You are probably just experiencing machines that aren't well taken care of.

But yeah, whatever, ITG is a rip off, it's still better than DDR. I think even if Konami put the ITG mods and stuff to use, it would suck. ITG just had a lot of better steps, and I like the way ITG looks better.

The arcade that I work at got a supernova machine as soon as they could. Dedicated cabinet. The sensors worked perfectly.

4 months later, the right side went to shit and the left side has a couple not-so-great-working sensors.

yeah i have about 6 DDR machines with different mixes around here and only one of them works really well compared to the other ones. I also have two ITG2 machines here and both work perfectly without any problems. I dont really know what to say on that...
