I just want to let the mods know if they didn't already and might be interested.
I currently run a PHPBB forum and there is a mod I installed that embeds you tube video right into a person's post by using the code

linkage <== where to get the mod.
If anyone one wants to see it in action I can put up a link to a post on my forum that uses it. _________________

I think that would be a horrific idea.
At least for this forum. _________________

Ah, well to be honest I could understand that. I can defiantly see people getting crazy with something like that. _________________

It's probably a good idea, but maybe the mod should be changed to be restricted to certain forums, or threads. |

I really don't see why we would need this. Especially when a link works fine. _________________

I agree. I don't think it's that useful anyways when people can link it in a thread.
I don't want that shit being embedded into the forums and automatically starting because some guy used the code. _________________

You miss the point. Large images aren't the same as videos. Videos have sound, and most oftentimes that sound is very annoying without the video. _________________

I'm sure there's a way to default the video to not play, and force you to click the video to play it. |

In Internet Explorer, I have it set to have a prompt come up asking me if I want to run ActiveX every time a video tries to play.
Then again, that's annoying too... _________________

I don't see why you couldn't just click the link instead of needing to embed video in a post. _________________

You have it set to bug you, and you're complaining that something would bug you. There's your problem.

The same could be said for images. |

Videos take a LOT longer to load than images. There's still no good reason why this forum needs this mod. _________________

Totally unnecessary.
If you don't care about the video, why would we make you waste bandwidth on it?
Note: Images are paltry in comparison, and if you don't care about them, you can disable those too.
Please don't use the excuse "you can disable videos too". There are key differences between embedded images and videos that have already been explained.
[edit]
Curious... I know there are some flash animations that are "click to load" and don't do any preloading of the video itself, just the flash content outside of that.
I am still not betting that we are going to do this, but for curiousity's sake, does YouTube do any preloading beyond the intial image of the first image/frame? _________________

Judging by the ones I've seen on blogs, no. They only load the first frame then wait for a click. |

Well, that's the only valid solution to my problem. In Opera, I have ActiveX set to off all the time. When I need to view a video, I open IE and tell it to use ActiveX, but it prompts every time something wants to use it. So, say there's 2 ads and a movie, and the movie is in the "middle" of them. I tell it to not use ActiveX with the first ad, tell it to with the video, then tell it not to with the second ad. So...yeah.
I don't know what I'm getting at, but there has to be a good point in there somewhere. _________________
